Customer Review: An easy repair

July 2010: My original review fom 2 years ago appears below and I'm not changing a word. But others comments on breakage is so contraty to our experience that I felt I must add this note.
These are great every-day glasses, not prone to tipping & with a bit of class and not one has broken although my wife & I, both in our 70's, do tend to knock them about a bit. [We've both a touch of arthritus & find both the square profile and side indentations yield a secure grasp with our weakening Medium & Large size hands.]
BUT, I've had experience with such very thick bottomed glasses [which I've always favored, as being less 'tippy', especially when our sons were small]. Always keep in mind that they can respond badly to large temperature shocks.
We've no dishwasher & these are fine going from room temp to the hottest tap water that my hands can stand.
But never, NEVER, fill such a glass when still ice-water cold with hot water - the material on the sides expands at a different rate than does that on the bottom which can result in a visable crack part way around the glass near the base. While it seems to remain intact, it's a gonner.
At the sink, the problem usually doesn't arrise - I normally start the tap at warm, not hot, anyway, But during/after parties I've had to stop loading stuff in the sink, then running the tap at the hottest and letting everything soak while I "Partied-On".
BTW: I gave a 2nd set of these to my now-grown son & he reports no problems after 18 months.
Having seen them in a NYC shop [at twice the price as single pieces] they were just as I expected: an interesting shape that's non-tippy & fits the hand well with a good weight in the clear glass that I like.
A slight but sharp chip on the lip of one of the sixteen was easily smoothed out with some silicon-carbide sandpaper - a very handy tool-kit addition for the next time you're in a good hardware store.
